The Square.Gent 1 year birthday!

This is a picture saying Happy Birthday

The Square.Gent was launched in October 2016 by 3 expat friends from Slovenia, the UK and Finland: Nina, Heather and Jenny. We wanted to create a space online for English-language information that we wish we would have had when we moved from our own countries to the city we love so much, Ghent.

To celebrate our 1st birthday, here is a summary of the busy year we’ve had launching the website, a list of Top 10 articles of all time, some statistics and suggestions of how you can contribute to The Square.Gent.

In January we participated in Community Gent’s New Years drink with a popular tombola in the STAM cafe. We raffled out 30+ gifts like Roomer bottles, massage and restaurant vouchers, toys and cinema tickets for lucky expat winners. We hope we can organise a similar event next year! Here Heather and Nina are showing off some of the prizes.

Some article anecdotes

Here are some funny stories of unexpected events that happened when we were writing and publishing our posts.

This is a love picture

Dating a Belgian Man was written as a fun filler article and was never supposed to be the top 1 article. It gets many views from the Philippines.

The Ultimate Guide to Books and Bookshops in Ghent went viral when it was published with more than a 1000 views last February.

Despite mentioning anti-theft tips when writing All About Biking in Ghent, the author Jenny had her bike stolen recently.

Some stats from our 1st year

Since we started we got more than 30,000 views!

We did a lot of Googling ourselves when we moved to the city, and we recognise that a lot of people want to have information at their fingertips, either when they are planning their move, or once they have arrived. Most of our traffic comes from Google, and you’ll find us on the top 2 pages for some commonly asked expat questions

Stats month by month from 2017. August was our absolute top month with 5000+ views. Our first month, October 2016 we had 900 views.

We have almost 400 followers on our Facebook!

  1. Gefeliciteerd! Congratulations on a great year!
You are such a helpful resource for expats like me in Gent. Even as a contributor (which I am so happy and grateful to be able to do), I learn something new from every The Square.Gent post. Cheers! Santé!
